The Atlanta Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section has sponsored the Edward J. Henning Memorial Award for many years. This is a cash award given to an outstanding ADR student at each of the state’s five ABA-accredited law schools: Emory, Georgia, Mercer, Georgia State, and John Marshall. These awards are given in memory of Ed Henning, one of the “founding fathers” of mediation in Georgia. Ms. Lamone Graham received the Henning Award for Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.
Lamone Graham, a graduate of Valdosta State University where she received her degree in Communications, shared her plans for the future: “After graduation [from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School], I will continue mediating and look forward to delving into consumer protection arbitration soon. I also plan to be a litigator and have interest in the business, criminal, and intellectual property fields.”
Reflecting on her approach to mediation, Graham expressed, “Many times, I find that people just need their side of the story to be heard. When I mediate, I often take the approach of trying to get parties to understand each other’s views so that even if there is an impasse, they might still be able to preserve their relationship. Mediation provides a less formal avenue than the courtroom for people to have conversations where they can be heard, but still focus on the heart of the matter. Mediation is such an important area in the legal field because it helps people work together even in the midst of a dispute, and provides the opportunity for parties to reach agreements that otherwise may not have been reached in court.”
